Synopsis
In Second Empire France, the veritable descent into the inferno of Etienne Lantier, a young unemployed man who becomes a miner. In the northern town of Montsou he comes into contact with poverty, alcoholism, sordid relationships, scoundrels like Chaval and good, generous men like Toussaint Maheu. A whole gamut of suffering humanity, all damned by Capital. He takes up the socialist struggle but the mine owners strike back and an enormous strike ensues. His only hope is the love of Catherine.
