Synopsis

Côme de Lambrefaut is the owner of a mortgaged estate, full of debts, and of a pack of hounds, which is the pride of the family. Disdainful of rich heiresses, he marries Agnès de Charançay, who is poor but who loves hunting. The death of their child triggers of Côme's anger. Agnès divorces, remarries a wealthy man and buys little by little the debts of her ex-husband, than the estate and finally the hounds.
