Synopsis

1821. Philippe Brideaux, Bonapartist officer, is debt-ridden and hopelessly in love with a dancer named Mariette. To keep her, he steals from his mother, his aunt and the company he works for. Following a plot against the monarchy, he is placed under house arrest in Issoudun where his brother Rouget lives with his servant and mistress, " La Rabouilleuse, " as the Balzac work is titled.
