Synopsis

This is the story of a failing marriage between Charles Forestier, a stuffy colonial official stationed on New Caledonia, and his exciteable and athletic young wife, as seen by their eleven-year old daughter Théa. Every morning, Mrs. Forestier goes off riding by the seashore, but when she comes back from her ride one day with a torn outfit, rumors begin to fly. Tensions within the family build to a climax during their attendance at a ball the colony's governor is giving for a visiting dignitary.
